Deep Tissue Massage Orlando FL

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic approach focused on targeting the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues. Unlike Swedish massage, which is more focused on relaxation, deep tissue massage is designed to address chronic pain, muscle tension, and injuries by using firmer pressure and slower strokes. The goal is to break down adhesions (knots) in the muscles, reduce inflammation, and increase mobility and flexibility.

This type of massage is particularly effective for clients dealing with muscle soreness from intense physical activity, postural issues, or repetitive stress injuries. By reaching the deeper layers of muscle and fascia, deep tissue massage can relieve pain and tension in a more targeted and sustained way. The techniques often involve using elbows, forearms, and even knuckles to apply more intense pressure, allowing the therapist to work through the layers of tension and adhesions that may not be accessible in a lighter massage.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

Relief from Chronic Pain

For individuals suffering from long-term pain, especially in the back, neck, or shoulders, deep tissue massage can provide significant relief by releasing deep-seated tension.

Improved Mobility

By breaking down scar tissue and adhesions, deep tissue massage improves flexibility and range of motion, making it easier for the body to move without restriction.

Stress Reduction

While the massage focuses on intense muscle work, it also promotes the release of endorphins, which help relieve stress and improve mood.

Enhanced Muscle Recovery

Athletes or those who engage in physical activities can benefit from deep tissue massage as it promotes faster recovery by improving blood flow and reducing inflammation in overworked muscles.

Postural Improvement

Deep tissue massage helps correct muscle imbalances caused by poor posture, especially for those who sit at desks for long periods or engage in repetitive motions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A client receiving deep tissue massage has specific areas of pain, tension, and adhesions due to injury, postural patterns, stress, lifestyle, and habitual movement. In a deep tissue massage, I use my hands, fingertips, knuckles, forearms and elbows to add pressure and specificity, further breaking the muscle adhesions apart and increasing circulation. I also use a muscle scraping tool to loosen the top layer of connective tissue tightness, and sometimes cupping or a percussive tool to improve blood flow. In comparison, a Swedish massage has a focus on relaxation, with light pressure and slower gliding motions.

A deep tissue massage is both a relaxing full body treatment as well as very specific to each muscle. Attending to where the muscles attach and insert at the joints helps loosen the tightness in the middle of each muscle. After applying oil or lotion, increasing relaxation and warming up the muscles, I add deeper pressure layer by layer, depending on the client’s preference. As per all massages, the back, arms, and legs are worked on in a deep tissue massage. The neck is a delicate area but the muscles can tolerate intentional work, and this helps circulation between the head and upper body.

While it is best to listen to your primary care physician’s recommendation, some conditions may prevent a person from receiving deep tissue massage. This includes,

  • Blood clotting disorders, such as Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Varicose veins
  • Bone fractures
  • Nerve sensitivity or injury
  • Hernias
  • Recent Chemotherapy

It is not my intention to hurt a client, ever! That being said, muscle soreness is fairly common after a massage, sometimes for 2-3 days. Similar to an intense workout, the muscles have been worked in a way that they positionally were not before, and added movement and blood flow will change how the body feels. It is important to communicate if the pressure is too strong, and in addition to the client’s conscious awareness, I work in accordance with the muscles, only adding more pressure if both client and body respond well.
